Sculpture Garden Notes With the LEAPING GAZELLE of 1936, this sculpture brackets a half-century of creativity. The hand, symbolic of a higher being, gives support or perhaps transport to the individual who is accompanied by two flying swans. The upward flowing contours of the hand, the human form, and the swans communicate the optimistic spiritual content, or meaning, of the sculpture. Fredericks was inspired by the 139th Psalm, verses 9 and 10: "If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me." This is inscribed on the pedestal of the cast in the Sculpture Garden, as well as the pedestal of the cast in the columbarium of Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield Hills. Title A name given to the resource The Boy and Bear [Bronze] Subject The topic of the resource Animal sculpture--20th century Figure sculpture, American--20th century Description An account of the resource Fredericks was one of six artists commissioned to design sculpture for Northland Shopping Center in Southfield. At the time it opened in 1954, Northland was the country's largest shopping center as well as the first regional shopping center. The architects planned for sculpture to play an important role in the shopping center's courts and malls. It is obvious that Fredericks designed this sculpture with children in mind. As with his other large animal sculptures, he gave the bear a benevolent quality so it would not frighten children. This bear could be a child's best friend. The contrast of the massive body of the bear with the almost frail body of the boy on his back emphasizes this special relationship. The bear's head is down, communicating only amicable intentions. Its erect ears and furrowed brow suggest interest in a viewer at this low eye level. Frederick's portrayal of the bear is not totally realistic, but like several of his other sculptures of animals, he has portrayed the bear as in a child's imagination. The sculpture at Northland still attracts as much attention today as when it was first placed there, pleasing children and adults alike. Despite similarities between this sculpture and the characters in Walt Disney's movie The Jungle Book, Fredericks disavows any influence from Walt Disney or Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book which was originally published in 1894. Fredericks has said that he simply wanted to make a sculpture of a boy and bear because it would be fun In a display case at the front of the gallery is a smaller and earlier version of this sculpture in bronze. McMorran Auditorium in Port Huron, Michigan. Fredericks also created a gold anodized aluminum Sculptured Clock on the building that was completed two years before the fountain's installation. The sculptures and clock were conceived as a unified design concept. In keeping with a long tradition in western art, the sculptor personified time with figures representing night and day. Night has long, smooth, graceful curves that are repeated in the lines of the swan in flight beneath her. In comparison, Day is more angular and his muscles are more pronounced, as are the veins in the arms and hands. Day rests upon an otter, hunting in a school of Northern pike and Night floats upon a swan in flight, holding a small bird in her hand. Sculpture sits in the sculpture garden. Depicts a nude woman on her proper left knee with her hands raised at head level. She has long braids. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the goddess of spring. She was abducted by Hades (known to the Romans as Pluto) and taken to the Underworld to be his wife. Her mother, Demeter (Ceres), the goddess of agriculture, searched the earth for her. Demeter finally found her, but since Persephone had eaten the seed of a pomegranate Hades offered her while in the Underworld, she could not return to the land of the living. Demeter was so upset she refused to bless the harvest. This left the earth sterile. However, she made a compromise with Hades. Persephone was allowed to spend half of the year with her mother in the upper world and the other half of the year with Hades in the Underworld. The purpose of this myth is to explain the death and regeneration of the earth each year. In one display case you will find the small scale BACCHANTE of 1935. But a dear scandinavian lady he knew due to his scandinavian work and who lived locally reminded him that there was a fable that the kids learned in school about the lion and the mouse. So he changed it and won the commission for the Eastland Mall project. She often visited the studio and would tell me this story. Title A name given to the resource The Lion and Mouse [Bronze] Subject The topic of the resource Animal sculpture--20th century Description An account of the resource Fredericks has said that this sculpture illustrates the story of "The Lion and the Mouse." In that story a lion caught a mouse, but as he was about to eat him the mouse pleaded for mercy, promising to help the lion one day. The lion was so amused by the prospect of a tiny mouse helping the king of the jungle that he let the mouse go. Some time later the mouse came across the lion tied up in a hunter's net. The mouse gnawed through the ropes to free him. In a different version of the story, the mouse extracted from the lion's paw a troublesome thorn too tiny for the massive lion's claws to catch. A fitting moral to the story is that kindness is seldom thrown away, be it given to the mightiest or lowliest of creatures. Notice how Fredericks captured the whole story in a single image that contrasts the tiny mouse with the larger lion. The J. L. Hudson Company commissioned this sculpture for Eastland Shopping Center in Harper Woods. Like many of Fredericks' sculptures, he designed it specifically for children. Both animals are humanized with friendly facial expressions. The lion's reclining position and his crossed legs are very human-like, yet his huge round head is stylized with uniformly coiled ringlets and his knees are abstracted. These alterations of nature make the king of the jungle unthreatening to children and adults alike. Smaller and earlier versions of these figures are included in a maquette for that fountain which is on display across the Museum. Fredericks enlarged the maquette to life size and cast this full-scale plaster original before leaving Cranbrook for military service in 1942. Yet the figures were not cast in bronze until 1965 when Robert Grindley decided that the composition would be an appropriate memorial for his wife. Title A name given to the resource Siberian Ram [Bronze] Subject The topic of the resource Animal sculpture--20th century Description An account of the resource The compact, monolithic form of the Siberian Ram contrasts with the more open composition of the Leaping Gazelle (#16), although both have spherical contours and strong curvilinear design elements. Both are evocative. Some viewers perceive them as joyful, playful animals, while others see fear and anguish in these sculptures. Fredericks first made the Siberian Ram in 1941, but the first documented bronze cast was not installed until 1966, when a 24 inch tall sculpture was placed in the rose garden of the Henry Ford estate in Dearborn. Fredericks carved a Siberian Ram in limestone on commission for the Birmingham Bloomfield Bank and that 30 inch tall stone sculpture was donated to the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham where it was installed in 1972. In the late 1980s, Fredericks made molds from that sculpture and cast bronzes for his personal collection and for the Museum (#55). He created the 9 inch tall reduction in the mid 1990s. Cervantes' "Don Quixote de la Mancha" is a masterpiece of world literature. It is as well known and loved today as when it was first issued in 1605. Cervantes glorified Knight Errantry with his parody of the romances of chivalry. Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza roamed the Spanish countryside in search of adventures. Fredericks' sculpture relays the whimsical quality of Don Quixote in his expression, posture, and in the method he is modeled. The form is highly stylized and hard-edged.
