Description
An account of the resource
This sculptural group of an Indian and four swans is located on the façade of the Milwaukee Public Museum.
Fredericks said of the design that the swans, “complement the simple surface (of the wall) with just the right dignified accent…(they are) stylized, artistic representations of the natural swan (having worked) with numerous studies from live specimens.â€
The actual title according to Fredericks is “Algonquian Indian and (Whistling) Swansâ€. Fredericks stated that this work symbolizes the freedom and beauty of nature in the Great Lakes area.
Each of the four swans in the completed bronze commission weighs about ½ ton and the Indian weighs just over a ton.

Description
An account of the resource
After modeling the Torso of a Dancer in about 1934, Fredericks carved it in Belgian black marble for the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He subsequently used the original plaster model to create several bronze casts.
The nude female form is a subject that has entranced artists since the dawn of time. Fredericks' treatment is typical of sculptors working during the Art Deco period when streamlined, elegant forms predominated, yet Fredericks' realistic but slightly idealized treatment of this traditional subject also illustrates his personal, mature style.

Description
An account of the resource
Atop a wooded hill overlooking a small pond in Detroit’s Elmwood Cemetery stands a memorial to the late attorney turned industrialist Alvan Macauley. Commissioned by his wife and son soon after his death in 1952, the sculpture reflects Macauley’s love of nature and wildlife. On a simple granite pedestal sit two bronze geese as they take off into flight. Beneath their bodies, the tips of swamp rushes bend under the weight of the birds’ wings.
According to the sculptor, waterfowl are a symbol of eternal life and this sculpture symbolizes “the ascendency of the soul no longer imprisoned by the body.†It is a fitting memorial to a man said to have deeply appreciated nature and “people who worked with their hands.â€
In addition to its original commission by the Macauley family, Flying Wild Geese also serves as a memorial to two former faculty members at Alma College. Commissioned by an Alma College alumni committee, the sculpture is set on a glacial sandstone pedestal in the college’s Monteith Library mall. At the sculpture’s dedication in 1971, Fredericks stated that “the birds in flight express freedom of inquiry and symbolized Michigan and its environment.â€
Found throughout the United States and the world, Flying Wild Geese is one of Marshall Fredericks’ most popular sculptures. Many corporations, universities, cultural institutions and private individuals have chosen one of these sculptures for their collections.

"While doing the inventory at Mr. Fredericks' studio I discovered that the portrait head we had been calling Joan Raseman is the Daughter of Arthur Nevill Kirk. Molly told me that when the gallery was being planned they put both names on the floor plan, not knowing how many would fit in the display case. They figured they could omit it from the floor plan. At the beginning of the summer Michale told me that we do not have the Daughter of Arthur Nevill Kirk so I changed our records. I have now changed our records again."

Arthur Nevill Kirk (1881 1958) executed the metalwork for Christ Church Cranbrook, taught at Cranbrook School, and was director of the metal workshop at Cranbrook Academy of Art between 1927 and 1933. Fredericks portrayed Kirk's daughter the year after Fredericks joined the staff of Cranbrook, an innovative school in suburban Detroit organized along the lines of arts and crafts institutes popular in England from the turn of the century.

Project (Job) Files: (7 linear feet) including correspondence between Fredericks and both sculpture commissioning clients and vendors that helped to fabricate the pieces

Description
An account of the resource
This sculpture represents Fredericks' interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's popular story, The Ugly Duckling. Unlike Fredericks' portrayals of other literary subjects, this sculpture illustrates not one moment in the story, but two.
Fredericks placed the unhappy duckling driven from place to place because of his ugliness at the base of the fountain. Located above is the beautiful swan he grew to be.
Fredericks emphasized the difference between the young and mature bird. The earthbound duckling is awkward and heavy, with stubby wings and tail while the swan soars overhead in an open form which appears almost weightless. Fredericks originally conceived this sculpture for the Danish Village retirement home in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
A bronze cast of this sculpture is located in Skælskor, Denmark where Hans Christian Andersen lived and penned “The Little Mermaid,†“The Ugly Duckling,†and many other children’s stories.
