Description An account of the resource This sculpture illustrates the well known Aesop Fable of “The Lion and the Mouse.” Fredericks’ rendition depicts the end of the story in which the tiny mouse returns the king of the jungle’s kindness by saving him from a hunter’s trap. The J. L. Hudson Company commissioned this sculpture for Eastland Center in Harper Woods, Michigan. Like many of Fredericks’ sculptures, he designed it specifically for children. Both animals possess humanized friendly facial expressions. The lion is reclining in a human-like position with crossed legs and his stylized round head and mane feature uniformly coiled ringlets. Perhaps the most notable feature of the building's interior was the expansive, curvilinear lobby adorned with some of Marshall Fredericks' most delicate and refined sculptures. A 145-feet long filigreed metal mural, The Ford Empire, swept almost the entire length of the curved outer wall. On the balcony walls at either end of the foyer stood polished metal theatrical groupings of circus performers, musicians, harlequins, and dancers. Formed from literally thousands of pieces of copper, nickel, brass, stainless steel, and aluminum and plated with gold, zinc, and cadmium these pieces were hand-shaped, joined, plated, and polished. The J. L. Hudson Company commissioned this sculpture for Eastland Center in Harper Woods, Michigan. Like many of Fredericks’ sculptures, he designed it specifically for children. Both animals possess humanized friendly facial expressions. The lion is reclining in a human-like position with crossed legs and his stylized round head and mane feature uniformly coiled ringlets.
