Their members study coins and medals. Each year the association hosts an annual convention. In 1962, the convention was held in Detroit and was a joint American/Canadian event. One of the traditions of the convention is the striking of a commemorative medal. Fredericks was commissioned to design the medal that year. The "reverse" side (back) of the medal features the symbol of the city of Detroit, The Spirit of Detroit, one of Fredericks' most beloved public sculptures. The model's and mold's surface is discolored by shellac, a releasing agent used in mold-making. The obverse (front) of the medal features symbols for America (eagle) and Canada (maple leaf) to commemorate the joint venture. The plaster mold (right) and model (left) can be seen in this case. The mold has one rim removed to display "keying"-small bumps on the plaster mold surface edge under the rim and small holes that fit over the bump on the rims. Iron rods are visible on the underside and are used for reinforcement of the mold. In 1978, the retired chairperson of General Motors Corporation, Roger Smith, conceived the idea for the GM Cancer Research Prize. This annual award recognizes, on an international basis, scientists who have made significant contributions to cancer research. The first awards were given on May 2, 1979. An award has been made annually since that time in memory of each person; Charles F. Kettering, Alfred P. Sloan & Charles S. Mott. In 2006, the award will be combined into one, rather than three awards. Charles Franklin Kettering was born August 29, 1876. He was known as "Boss" Kettering. He received a degree from Ohio State University in Electrical Engineering in 1904. Kettering held more than 300 U.S. patents and among his inventions was: electric starters for automobiles, Freon, a treatment for venereal disease, and an incubator for premature infants. Kettering also had a town in Ohio named after him and had the first home in the United States to have air conditioning. He died November, 1958. In 1998 GMI (General Motors Institute) was renamed Kettering University. This plaster relief is signed and dated by Fredericks. The medallion was minted in bronze and gold-plated bronze in 1979. BIRD, PHILIP SYNOD (9 Nov. 1886-10 June 1948), a clergyman and civic leader, was born in Newtonville, Mass., the son of Joseph Edward and Gertrude Hubbard Smead Bird. He graduated with an A.B. from Pomona College, Claremont, Calif. (1909); from the University of California with a Master of Literature degree (1910); and from Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1913. Bird was ordained on 11 May 1913 and served as pastor and teacher of Biblical literature at churches and schools in Claremont, Calif, and Dobbins Ferry and Utica, N.Y. before his installation as pastor of the CHURCH OF THE COVENANT in Cleveland on 20 Feb. 1928. During his ministry, membership increased (from 1,733 to 2,500); Christ Chapel was created; the Williamson Chancel was restructured; and the Student Christian Union on the Western Reserve University campus was established. Bird was president of the Cleveland Church Fed. (1931-33); chairman of the Church Extension Committee of the Presbyterian of Cleveland (1929-33); and moderator of the Presbyterian (1942-43). In 1933 he organized the interfaith Cleveland Peace Committee, and was elected its chairman in 1936. He was also on the board of numerous civic and social service organizations. Dr. Bird received honorary degrees from Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. (1924); from WRY (1928); and from the College of the Ozark, Clarksville, Arc. (1933). Dr. Bird married Margaret Hubbard Kincaid of Utica, N.Y., on 11 July 1922; and had 1 daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Margaret Elizabeth) Kudva. Dr. Bird died in Cleveland and is buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY. His legs are also crossed as he stares ahead. The knees have the classic tear drop shape characteristic of many of Marshall's animals. When the Cranbrook Art Museum was completed, George Booth said to Fredericks, "Marshall, I want you to do a Thinker to put on the steps of the Cranbrook museum. Every museum has a Thinker in front. We should have one ." To do Rodin's sculpture over again in any form was unthinkable. With the shrewd humor he sometimes exhibited, Fredericks chose a block of black granite and carved the massive, self-enclosed ape that now site before the Cranbrook Art Museum. When it was shown to him, Booth looked at it for a moment disconcerted; then recognizing the idea and the sculpture's quality, he said, "Well, it may be that he is thinking far more interesting thoughts than we are.
