Mold is yellowish due to the shellac applied to seal the plaster. According to Scott Slocum, Frederick's assistant, this small mold of an owl was cut away from a portrait relief mold of Henry Booth, son of the founder of Cranbrook Educational Community, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Burlap is visible in the plaster and is added for reinforcement. The plaster discoloration is shellac, used as a releasing agent.
