McMorran Auditorium in Port Huron, Michigan commissioned the Night and Day Fountain as well as a gold anodized aluminum Sculptured Clock for the building. Completed two years before the fountain’s installation, Fredericks conceived the sculptures and clock as a unified design concept. In keeping with a long tradition in western art, the sculptor personified time with figures representing night and day. Night possesses long, smooth, graceful curves. Night floats upon a swan in flight, holding a small bird in her hand. In comparison to Night, Day is more angular with more pronounced muscles and veins in his arms and hands. Day rests upon an otter which is hunting in a school of Northern pike. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Photostat 18" x 19.5" The event depicted on the seal is the signing of the peace treaty between Chief Pontiac (Ottawa) and Brig. General Anthony Wayne in 1796. Between the men stands a flag with stars in the middle. The treaty opened the land to be settled into what is now the city of Detroit. Included on the medallion are the phrases "Seal of the County of Wayne Michigan 1796", "We Produce", "We Defend", "Freedom of Man"' and "In God We Trust". The county was named for General Wayne. The bronze Seal of Wayne County hangs in the office of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in Detroit. It is also mounted above the Spirit of Detroit sculpture at the same location. According to the Joy Colby 1981 interview with Marshall Fredericks, he created this seal because there was no seal for the county when he designed the Spirit of Detroit. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Photostat 16.5" x 22" The Ford Empire relief was located in the Ford Auditorium constructed on the Detroit riverfront as the new home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra during 1955-1956. Perhaps the most notable feature of the building's interior was the expansive, curvilinear lobby adorned with some of Marshall Fredericks' most delicate and refined sculptures. A 145-feet long filigreed metal mural, The Ford Empire, swept almost the entire length of the curved outer wall. On the balcony walls at either end of the foyer stood polished metal theatrical groupings of circus performers, musicians, harlequins, and dancers. Formed from literally thousands of pieces of copper, nickel, brass, stainless steel, and aluminum and plated with gold, zinc, and cadmium these pieces were hand-shaped, joined, plated, and polished.
