Completed under the Section of Fine Arts Public Buildings Administration Federal Works Agency, the finished terracotta relief originally hung over the Postmaster's door in Sandwich, Illinois. A mare and colt dominate the center portion of the relief. Balancing on either side are a ewe with two lambs and a sow with one of her pudgy shoats. Fredericks Sculpture Museum Description An account of the resource Mrs. Dorothy (Honey) Arbury studied with Fredericks when she attended Kingswood School at the Cranbrook Educational Community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in the 1930s. She met him through her uncle, Alden B. Dow, a prominent architect in Midland, Michigan, with whom Fredericks worked on architectural sculpture projects. In 1963, Mrs. Arbury was on the founding Board of Control of Saginaw Valley College, which later became Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). She remained active on that board and on the SVSU Foundation Board into the 1990s. Mrs. Arbury and her husband, Ned Arbury, and Fredericks and his wife, Rosalind Fredericks, formed the idea of a permanent exhibit of Fredericks' work adjacent to the university's then-new facility for the art, music and theater departments. SVSU and the Arburys worked together toward an agreement to have the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Gallery and Sculpture Garden built adjacent to the art department. The gallery opened to the public in the Arbury Fine Arts Center in May 1988. About half of the $7.2 million of private money raised for the building went to design and construction, restoration, transportation and installation. Fredericks oversaw installation of the more than 200 mostly plaster models in the permanent exhibit gallery. Through the years, private donors have made it possible for some of the bronze casts to be made for the Sculpture Garden. Fredericks gave the balance of the collection in 1994. After his death in 1998, the gallery received his remaining tools, equipment, archives, architectural site models, sculptures and more. With the growth of the collection, the Board of Advisors elevated the gallery to museum status in 1999. In October 2003, the $2.5 million Phase II Capital Campaign expansion became a reality, nearly doubling the museum's size. The addition includes the Sculptor's Studio, a classroom, archives vault, research reading room, two temporary exhibition galleries and a gift shop. Limestone sculpture Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 This sculpture illustrates the well known Aesop Fable of “The Lion and the Mouse.” Fredericks’ rendition depicts the end of the story in which the tiny mouse returns the king of the jungle’s kindness by saving him from a hunter’s trap. The J. L. Hudson Company commissioned this sculpture for Eastland Center in Harper Woods, Michigan. Like many of Fredericks’ sculptures, he designed it specifically for children. Both animals possess humanized friendly facial expressions. The lion is reclining in a human-like position with crossed legs and his stylized round head and mane feature uniformly coiled ringlets. These artistic intentions make the “king of the jungle” appealing to all. The Vice President of General Motors, Chevrolet division commissioned Fredericks to do this full-length portrait of his grandson, Michael Emmet Taylor. When brought to Fredericks’ studio for his portrait sitting, young Michael held a small ball in his hand. The youngster kept playing with the ball so Fredericks included it in the portrait. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource This is the full-scale model for the figures in the Two Sisters Fountain, located in a courtyard of Kingswood School at Cranbrook Educational Community, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Inspired by the helpful attitude of the girls at Kingswood, Fredericks cast this full-scale plaster original before leaving Cranbrook for military service in 1942. It was not until 1965 when Cranbrook Board of Trustees member Robert Grindley decided that the sculpture would be an appropriate memorial for his wife that the bronze casting of the figures was completed. His two daughters attended Kingswood School, thus the title Two Sisters. The bronze sculpture stands at the entrance to Kingswood School. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Fredericks stylized Victory Eagle in a very geometric and angular way for the exterior of the Federal Reserve Bank in Cincinnati, Ohio. Although abstracted, the Victory Eagle appears to be landing on the surface of the pedestal. Moreover, it is situated above the eye-level of the viewer and looks down with glaring eyes. Its upraised wings, sharp beak, and talons add to its fierceness. Wayne State University commissioned this bronze plaque mounted on Minnesota sunset red granite.
