Fredericks 1994.003 Fredericks executed several woodcarving during the early part of his career. He made this sculpture, possibly during his senior year, at the Cleveland School of Art. Note the varying degrees of finish in the portrait. The head is worked in greater detail than the lower portions of the sculpture, and the bark of the tree is left intact around the bottom. A large crack down the back of the sculpture was filled with wood shims at the time of carving. This is the only portrait Fredericks is known to have carved in wood. The subject is unknown. Coppin 1904 - 1986 John S. Coppin was the son of Thomas and Maude L (Leveed) Coppin of Mitchell, Ontario. He was born 13 Dept 1904, Mitchell, Ontario and died aged 81, 1750 Bun Franklin Drive, Sarasota, he died on June 26th 1986 at a local nursing home. He came to Sarasota co 1969 from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. His grandfather also John Stevens Coppins was born in 1837 Cardamom, near Bodkin, Cornwall, England, he came to Canada co 1965 with his wife Charlotte (Pascoe) and settled in Mitchell, Ontario where they spent the rest of their lives. For 40 years John painted covers of AWE Motor News, the forerunner of Michigan Living magazine. Noted personalities who posed for him include actor Sir Alec Guineas and eccentric artist Suitcases Hartmann. The Hartmann portrait is displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. He considered his murals titled Man and Transportation in the Detroit Public Library main building among his finest work. He was educated at Strayed Collegiate Institute, John Wicker School of Art in Detroit and Study Tours of Europe. He was a member of American Federation of Artists and a fellow of International Institute of Arts and Letters. He as listed in Marquise "Who's in the Midwest" International "Who's in Art and Antiques" and "Who's in American Art." He was awarded the Scarab Club Gold Medal in Detroit for three years, the Institute of Arts Popular Prize for four years and the Carl F. Clarke Award in 1953, Hartzke Prize in 1953 and other prizes. Fredericks Sculpture Museum Description An account of the resource Mrs. Dorothy (Honey) Arbury studied with Fredericks when she attended Kingswood School at the Cranbrook Educational Community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in the 1930s. She met him through her uncle, Alden B. Dow, a prominent architect in Midland, Michigan, with whom Fredericks worked on architectural sculpture projects. In 1963, Mrs. Arbury was on the founding Board of Control of Saginaw Valley College, which later became Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). She remained active on that board and on the SVSU Foundation Board into the 1990s. Mrs. Arbury and her husband, Ned Arbury, and Fredericks and his wife, Rosalind Fredericks, formed the idea of a permanent exhibit of Fredericks' work adjacent to the university's then-new facility for the art, music and theater departments. SVSU and the Arburys worked together toward an agreement to have the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Gallery and Sculpture Garden built adjacent to the art department. The gallery opened to the public in the Arbury Fine Arts Center in May 1988. About half of the $7.2 million of private money raised for the building went to design and construction, restoration, transportation and installation. Fredericks oversaw installation of the more than 200 mostly plaster models in the permanent exhibit gallery. Through the years, private donors have made it possible for some of the bronze casts to be made for the Sculpture Garden. Fredericks gave the balance of the collection in 1994. After his death in 1998, the gallery received his remaining tools, equipment, archives, architectural site models, sculptures and more. With the growth of the collection, the Board of Advisors elevated the gallery to museum status in 1999. In October 2003, the $2.5 million Phase II Capital Campaign expansion became a reality, nearly doubling the museum's size. The addition includes the Sculptor's Studio, a classroom, archives vault, research reading room, two temporary exhibition galleries and a gift shop. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Ink on notepad paper 5" x 8" The idea to create a memorial honoring Henry Ford took root in 1948 when the Dearborn, Michigan Chamber of Commerce conducted a poll of Dearborn residents and learned that most of the populace favored such a proposal. The Dearborn Chamber of Commerce initiated a fundraising drive to finance a life-size full-length bronze of the auto magnate and commissioned Marshall Fredericks to design the sculpture. Fredericks’ original model for the memorial consisted of a sixty-year-old Henry Ford standing with one hand on the shoulder of a teenage boy and the other hand pointing towards the future. Although approved by the Ford family, Fredericks never executed the design, as fundraising proved to be difficult, causing the project to be put on hold. In 1967, almost twenty years after the original proposal, the Inter-Service Club Council of Dearborn revived the project, calling upon residents of the city to raise funds for the monument through public subscription. Unfortunately many Dearborn residents thought that the teenage boy in the model was Edsel Ford, Henry Ford’s son, and not a representation of Henry Ford in his youth, as the artist intended. Although a historically inaccurate assumption, the confusion persisted, causing the Henry Ford Statue Committee to scrap the original concept in favor of a new design. Located at the Henry Ford Centennial Library, the final memorial is a life-size bronze figure of Henry Ford in his familiar pose, standing with his hands in his pockets, situated at the center of a serpentine marble wall. At the memorial’s unveiling in 1975, Fredericks remarked “This pose, the thoughtful look, represents him in the best way. I like to see him thinking.” Intended to tell the story of Ford’s life, bronze reliefs depicting his early childhood, adolescence and the growth of the Ford Empire accompany the central figure. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Graphite on tracing paper 18.75" x 23.75" The erection of The Spirit of Detroit at the City-County Building (now Coleman A. Young Municipal Center) in 1958 marked the formal completion of the structure whose construction began in 1951. Located in front of a white marble wall at the entrance to the building, the sculpture depicts the cultural and religious spirit of the Detroit community. At the time, The Spirit of Detroit was said to be the largest sculpture cast in Europe since the Renaissance period (1400 – 1600). It stands sixteen feet high and twenty-two feet across from fingertip to fingertip. On the Vermont marble wall behind the figure are the official seals of Wayne County, Michigan and the City of Detroit. Engraved on the wall is a verse from II Corinthians: ”Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” Designed to continue the thought indicated in the inscription on the wall, the sculpture is in the form of a kneeling man with outstretched arms. In his right hand he holds a father, mother and child representing family, which, according to Fredericks, is “probably the noblest human relationship.” In his left hand, the figure bears a sphere with rays emanating from it signifying deity. Fredericks chose the sphere because it is an object complete in itself with no beginning and no end. This sculpture took Fredericks four years to complete and meant a great deal to the sculptor, who once remarked, “I pray only that this work in some small way inspire those who see it.” Fredericks appears to have gotten his wish as the citizens of Detroit immediately embraced this giant figure as the city’s cultural icon by giving it the affectionate nickname, “The Jolly Green Giant.” The sculpture is also frequently dressed in local sporting teams’ jerseys during playoff action, and The Spirit of Detroit’s image appears as the central element in the logos of the city’s departments and services.
