The event depicted on the seal is the signing of the peace treaty between Chief Pontiac (Ottawa) and Brig. General Anthony Wayne in 1796. Between the men stands a flag with stars in the middle. The treaty opened the land to be settled into what is now the city of Detroit. Included on the medallion are the phrases "Seal of the County of Wayne Michigan 1796", "We Produce", "We Defend", "Freedom of Man"' and "In God We Trust". The county was named for General Wayne.
The bronze Seal of Wayne County hangs in the office of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in Detroit. It is also mounted above the Spirit of Detroit sculpture at the same location.
According to the Joy Colby 1981 interview with Marshall Fredericks, he created this seal because there was no seal for the county when he designed the Spirit of Detroit.

Cast in bronze in 1955, this relief depicts a flock of seven foreshortened sheep staring straight ahead at the viewer. Two smaller sheep, possibly lambs, are included in the bottom right hand corner. Fredericks incorporated a great deal of detail in each of the sheep, especially in their fluffy wool coats.
In the English language the phrase “black sheep†is an expression used to describe an unusual or disgraceful member of a group, especially within one’s family. In the presentation drawing for Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived), Fredericks includes one black sheep among the herd of white sheep. However, in its final form, Fredericks chose not to incorporate any wayward black sheep in the relief. Instead he opted to apply a uniform green patina to its surface.
Fredericks used a similar sheep design when creating the gold anodized aluminum relief for the Central United Methodist Church in Waterford, Michigan. Christ the Good Shepherd features five sheep comparable to those found in Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived). Completed ten years after Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived), Fredericks indisputably drew inspiration for the church project from this earlier work.

The Ford Empire relief was located in the Ford Auditorium constructed on the Detroit riverfront as the new home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra during 1955-1956. Perhaps the most notable feature of the building's interior was the expansive, curvilinear lobby adorned with some of Marshall Fredericks' most delicate and refined sculptures.
A 145-feet long filigreed metal mural, The Ford Empire, swept almost the entire length of the curved outer wall. On the balcony walls at either end of the foyer stood polished metal theatrical groupings of circus performers, musicians, harlequins, and dancers. Formed from literally thousands of pieces of copper, nickel, brass, stainless steel, and aluminum and plated with gold, zinc, and cadmium these pieces were hand-shaped, joined, plated, and polished.

The erection of The Spirit of Detroit at the City-County Building (now Coleman A. Young Municipal Center) in 1958 marked the formal completion of the structure whose construction began in 1951. Located in front of a white marble wall at the entrance to the building, the sculpture depicts the cultural and religious spirit of the Detroit community. At the time, The Spirit of Detroit was said to be the largest sculpture cast in Europe since the Renaissance period (1400 – 1600). It stands sixteen feet high and twenty-two feet across from fingertip to fingertip.
On the Vermont marble wall behind the figure are the official seals of Wayne County, Michigan and the City of Detroit. Engraved on the wall is a verse from II Corinthians: â€Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.†Designed to continue the thought indicated in the inscription on the wall, the sculpture is in the form of a kneeling man with outstretched arms. In his right hand he holds a father, mother and child representing family, which, according to Fredericks, is “probably the noblest human relationship.†In his left hand, the figure bears a sphere with rays emanating from it signifying deity. Fredericks chose the sphere because it is an object complete in itself with no beginning and no end.
This sculpture took Fredericks four years to complete and meant a great deal to the sculptor, who once remarked, “I pray only that this work in some small way inspire those who see it.†Fredericks appears to have gotten his wish as the citizens of Detroit immediately embraced this giant figure as the city’s cultural icon by giving it the affectionate nickname, “The Jolly Green Giant.†The sculpture is also frequently dressed in local sporting teams’ jerseys during playoff action, and The Spirit of Detroit’s image appears as the central element in the logos of the city’s departments and services.

Tracy W. McGregor (1869-1936) was a civic leader, educator, and philanthropist with a particular interest in community health and the plight of the poor. He was instrumental in establishing the Committee on Health Activities, which developed into the McGregor Health
Foundation and the McGregor Center in Detroit, Michigan. He contributed to the founding of the Wayne County Training School and was the first president of the Merrill-Palmer School, both in Detroit, Michigan.
