Fredericks 1991.134 Fredericks was one of six artists commissioned to design sculpture for Northland Shopping Center in Southfield. At the time it opened in 1954, Northland was the country's largest shopping center as well as the first regional shopping center. The architects planned for sculpture to play an important role in the shopping center's courts and malls. It is obvious that Fredericks designed this sculpture with children in mind. As with his other large animal sculptures, he gave the bear a benevolent quality so it would not frighten children. This bear could be a child's best friend. The contrast of the massive body of the bear with the almost frail body of the boy on his back emphasizes this special relationship. The bear's head is down, communicating only amicable intentions. Its erect ears and furrowed brow suggest interest in a viewer at this low eye level. Frederick's portrayal of the bear is not totally realistic, but like several of his other sculptures of animals, he has portrayed the bear as in a child's imagination. The sculpture at Northland still attracts as much attention today as when it was first placed there, pleasing children and adults alike. Despite similarities between this sculpture and the characters in Walt Disney's movie The Jungle Book, Fredericks disavows any influence from Walt Disney or Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book which was originally published in 1894. Fredericks has said that he simply wanted to make a sculpture of a boy and bear because it would be fun In a display case at the front of the gallery is a smaller and earlier version of this sculpture in bronze. Fredericks 1994.002 After modeling the Torso of a Dancer in about 1934, Fredericks carved it in Belgian black marble for the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He subsequently used the original plaster model to create several bronze casts such as this one. Unlike all the other bronze casts in the museum, the Torso is not patinated with chemicals to produce the green or brown surface color commonly found on bronzes. Fredericks chose to leave the Torso with its raw bronze color. He finished the statue with a high degree of polish to emphasize the smooth forms, graceful lines, and strong muscles of the figure. This cast, made in 1984, exhibits the fine craftsmanship that Fredericks demanded of his founders. The Sculptor's Studio displays other versions of this sculpture. The nude female form is a subject that has entranced artists since the dawn of time. Fredericks' treatment is typical of sculptors working during the Art Deco period when streamlined, elegant forms predominated, yet Fredericks' realistic but slightly idealized treatment of this traditional subject also illustrates his personal, mature style. Note the varying degrees of finish in the portrait. The head is worked in greater detail than the lower portions of the sculpture, and the bark of the tree is left intact around the bottom. A large crack down the back of the sculpture was filled with wood shims at the time of carving. This is the only portrait Fredericks is known to have carved in wood. The subject is unknown. Fredericks 1994.004 During his early years as an artist, Fredericks carved several tall thin figures in wood. A few were carved from old fence posts the artist acquired. This wood sprite, a mythical creature that lived in the woods and personified the spirit of nature, has stylized facial features similar to those found in some African art. On her left shoulder are a child and a chimpanzee. Throughout his career, Fredericks used children, chimpanzees, baboons, and other animals often together in a single sculpture like the Boy and the Bear, to suggest the close bonds that bind living things together. Fredericks 1994.012 Aitken was a student with Fredericks at the Cleveland School of Art. Fredericks was enrolled there 1928 1930. This is one of the earliest portrait busts known by Fredericks. He modeled the naturalistic portrayal in terra cotta, which was then fired in a kiln. Aitken also worked in clay. He was noted for his ceramic sculptures that were exhibited in Cleveland and New York City in the early 1930s. He was also renowned as an outdoors man and a sports writer.
