“The Expanding Universe Fountain†celebrates the nation's first exploration of outer space. According to Fredericks, the sculpture "represents this age of great interest, exploration and discovery in outer space...[and] the immensity, order and mystery of the universe.â€
The monumental central figure suggests a superhuman mythological being. Seated upon a ten-foot sphere, covered in a pattern of bright-star constellations, the figure holds two planets that he is sending off into space. The dynamic spiral orbit-form swirling around the sphere represents the speed and perpetual motion of space. Play of the water from numerous star-shaped sprays increases the feeling of movement.
The full-scale casting of this sculpture is located in the South Court of the United States State Department Building in Washington, D.C.
The fountain is also known as: "Man and the Expanding Universe"

Description
An account of the resource
The Fountain, also known as the "Cleveland War Memorial", is composed of a large granite basin set with bronze plaques containing the names of men and women who gave their lives for their country. Located within the basin are four granite carvings depicting the great civilizations of the earth: Nordic, Eastern, Southern and Western cultures.
Centered within is the 10 ½ foot sculptured bronze sphere representing the Universe as man has imagined it. Its design contains symbols of Eternal Life and Spirit derived from ancient myths.
The bronze central figure towers 43 feet above the basin. This figure expresses the main theme of the Fountain: the spirit of mankind rising out of the flames of war and the destructive elements of life, reaching and ascending to a new understanding of life.
The Fountain took nineteen years to complete and is located at the Civic Center Mall A in Cleveland, Ohio.

Relief portrait blank with a pencil sketch of Reuben Trane on surface. The yellowish color is from the shellac used to seal the plaster. Text on the plaster is "Ruben N Trane 1886-1954 Engineer Inventor Leader".
Definition: inventor, manufacturer, business executive, b. La Crosse. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (B.S., 1910), and from 1910 to 1913 worked as a sales engineer. In 1913 he helped to organize the Trane Co. in La Crosse, manufacturers of heating and ventilating equipment. Trane was president of this firm (1916-1951) and chairman of the board of directors (1951-1953). A holder of numerous patents for heating and ventilating, he was instrumental in developing convector-type heaters, aluminum aircraft radiators, the heating and ventilating equipment for ships, airplanes, and industrial plants, and mechanical-refrigeration equipment for railroad cars. Under his leadership, the firm became one of the largest manufacturers in La Crosse and eventually opened branches in Scranton, Pa., and Toronto, Canada. Who's Who in Amer., 27 (1952); F. L. Reverse: Two wrens, South Carolina's state bird, perched on rhododendrons.
Presented to Sustaining, Patron, and Life members in 1977, also part of Brookgreen Gardens Annual Medallic Series. Exhibited as United States entry at the Biennial Exhibition of the Féderation Internationale de la Médaille (F.I.D.E.M.) in Florence, Italy, 1983.

Description
An account of the resource
The façade of the New Dallas Public Library contained an 880-pound, 20 foot high aluminum sculpture by Marshall Fredericks entitled "Youth in the Hands of God." Symbolizing "the hands of God supporting youth reaching for learning through the medium of literature," the $12,000 relief sculpture depicted two hands lifting a boy wearing blue jeans. The library planned to take the sculpture with them to the new building, but it remained on the empty building for several years. In 1993 the sculpture was sold and now resides at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State University.
