Description An account of the resource In Greek mythology, Persephone was the goddess of spring. Following her abduction to the Underworld by Hades, Persephone’s mother Demeter attempted to rescue her. After discovering Persephone had eaten a pomegranate seed and was therefore unable to return to the land of the living, Demeter refused to bless the harvest leaving the earth sterile. Filled with guilt, Hades made a compromise with Demeter to allow Persephone to spend half of the year with her mother in the upper world and the other half with him in the Underworld. The purpose of this Greek myth was to explain the continuing seasonal cycle of the earth each year. Fredericks created Persephone in 1972 from his 1935 Bacchante sculpture at the request of Henry Booth (son of Cranbrook Educational Community founder George Gough Booth) for Cranbrook’s Greek Theatre, its present location. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Fredericks first completed Siberian Ram in 1941, but a 24-inch tall sculpture installed in 1966 at the rose garden of the Henry Ford estate in Dearborn, Michigan is the first documented bronze cast. Fredericks carved a Siberian Ram in limestone on commission for the Birmingham-Bloomfield Bank which in 1972 donated the 30-inch tall stone sculpture to the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Michigan. In the late 1980s, Fredericks made molds from that sculpture and cast bronzes for his personal collection and for the museum. He created the 9-inch tall reduction in the mid-1990s. Compared with the idealized style of most of Fredericks' works, his portrait style is more realistic though simplified. Located at the Grand Bahamas Port Authority, Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island, Churchill's serious expression and the strong modeling give this portrait a stately permanence appropriate for a memorial. Description An account of the resource This fountain celebrates the nation's first exploration of outer space. According to Fredericks, the sculpture "represents this age of great interest, exploration and discovery in outer space...[and] the immensity, order and mystery of the universe.” The monumental central figure suggests a superhuman mythological being. Seated upon a ten-foot sphere, covered in a pattern of bright-star constellations, the figure holds two planets that he is sending off into space. The dynamic spiral orbit-form swirling around the sphere represents the speed and perpetual motion of space. Play of the water from numerous star-shaped sprays increases the feeling of movement. The full-scale casting of this sculpture is located in the South Court of the United States State Department Building in Washington, D.C.
