An account of the resource
In this sculpture, a large brown and small black bear sit back to back in quiet thought. Although in nature these two animals are enemies, Fredericks portrays the two in a gentle humanistic way, stressing tolerance.
Notice the differences in the bears’ ears and noses. Also if you look closely at the small bear’s knees you will notice a tear drop sculpting style, known as one of Fredericks’ trademarks.
Carson Pirie Scott & Company originally commissioned Two Bears for Lincoln Square, a shopping center in Urbana, Illinois.

Description
An account of the resource
Two Sisters Fountain is located in a courtyard of Kingswood School at Cranbrook Educational Community, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Inspired by the helpful attitude of the girls at Kingswood, Fredericks cast the full-scale plaster original before leaving Cranbrook for military service in 1942.
It was not until 1965 when Cranbrook Board of Trustees member Robert Grindley decided that the sculpture would be an appropriate memorial for his wife that the bronze casting of the figures was completed. His two daughters attended Kingswood School, thus the title Two Sisters. The bronze sculpture stands at the entrance to Kingswood School.

Description
An account of the resource
The flying swans represent the atmosphere of the unfolding morning. Fredericks often used swans in his sculptures to symbolize eternal life. The hand of God enfolds the spirit of man as he takes the wings of the morning. The upward flowing contours communicate the optimistic spiritual content of the sculpture.
Fredericks was inspired by Psalm 139:9-10:
"If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me."
These verses are inscribed on the pedestal of the bronze cast at Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Description
An account of the resource
The erection of The Spirit of Detroit at the City-County Building (now Coleman A. Young Municipal Center) in 1958 marked the formal completion of the structure whose construction began in 1951. Located in front of a white marble wall at the entrance to the building, the sculpture depicts the cultural and religious spirit of the Detroit community. At the time, The Spirit of Detroit was said to be the largest sculpture cast in Europe since the Renaissance period (1400 – 1600). It stands sixteen feet high and twenty-two feet across from fingertip to fingertip.
On the Vermont marble wall behind the figure are the official seals of Wayne County, Michigan and the City of Detroit. Engraved on the wall is a verse from II Corinthians: â€Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.†Designed to continue the thought indicated in the inscription on the wall, the sculpture is in the form of a kneeling man with outstretched arms. The erection of The Spirit of Detroit at the City-County Building (now Coleman A. Young Municipal Center) in 1958 marked the formal completion of the structure whose construction began in 1951. Located in front of a white marble wall at the entrance to the building, the sculpture depicts the cultural and religious spirit of the Detroit community. At the time, The Spirit of Detroit was said to be the largest sculpture cast in Europe since the Renaissance period (1400 – 1600). It stands sixteen feet high and twenty-two feet across from fingertip to fingertip.
On the Vermont marble wall behind the figure are the official seals of Wayne County, Michigan and the City of Detroit. Engraved on the wall is a verse from II Corinthians: â€Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.†Designed to continue the thought indicated in the inscription on the wall, the sculpture is in the form of a kneeling man with outstretched arms.
