The architect said he didn't think he would use it because he said the children would be frightened of a dragon. But children love dragons and it's not an ugly dragon, it's a friendly dragon with a big smile and it's cozy and you can sit on its back on those humps on its back. It's just that he never was a child, I guess, so he doesn't know. So they put up a thing, a structural beam thing. I've never seen a child near it so maybe they didn't get the audience that they wanted really. I think maybe I'll do that Dragon. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Pencil on yellow drawing paper 5.5" x 8.5" Fredericks first completed Siberian Ram in 1941, but a 24-inch tall sculpture installed in 1966 at the rose garden of the Henry Ford estate in Dearborn, Michigan is the first documented bronze cast. Fredericks carved a Siberian Ram in limestone on commission for the Birmingham-Bloomfield Bank which in 1972 donated the 30-inch tall stone sculpture to the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Michigan. In the late 1980s, Fredericks made molds from that sculpture and cast bronzes for his personal collection and for the museum. He created the 9-inch tall reduction in the mid-1990s. Fredericks, Marshall M., 1908-1998 Description An account of the resource Pencil on yellow drawing paper 5.5" x 5.75" Fredericks designed this series for a national products competition in 1939 in hopes that they would be placed on a government building in Washington DC, but the building was never built. The series consisted of 12 reliefs. Three are located at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum: "Cotton Pickers," "Colt and Pigs," and "Steers". Later Marshall grouped these three with "Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived)" and "Chimpanzee (Philosopher"). Cast in bronze in 1955, "Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived)" depicts a flock of seven foreshortened sheep staring straight ahead at the viewer. Two smaller sheep, possibly lambs, are included in the bottom right hand corner. Fredericks incorporated a great deal of detail in each of the sheep, especially in their fluffy wool coats. Sin in art Description An account of the resource Pencil on yellow drawing paper 5.5" x 8.5" Fredericks created the thirty-inch tall The Saints and Sinners in 1939 while at Cranbrook. These seven figures are in the style of jamb statues found in the portals of Gothic cathedrals. Attached to columns, sculptors lengthened these figures with unnatural proportions. Fredericks' figures all conform to this elongated shape and he has amusingly balanced them atop small orbs. Although they are very similar in style, each one is individualized and possesses distinguishing attributes that in some way identifies them.
