The Fountain, also known as the "Cleveland War Memorial", is composed of a large granite basin set with bronze plaques containing the names of men and women who gave their lives for their country. Located within the basin are four granite carvings depicting the great civilizations of the earth: Nordic, Eastern, Southern and Western cultures.

Centered within is the 10 ½ foot sculptured bronze sphere representing the Universe as man has imagined it. Its design contains symbols of Eternal Life and Spirit derived from ancient myths.

The bronze central figure towers 43 feet above the basin. This figure expresses the main theme of the Fountain: the spirit of mankind rising out of the flames of war and the destructive elements of life, reaching and ascending to a new understanding of life.

The Fountain took nineteen years to complete and is located at the Civic Center Mall A in Cleveland, Ohio.</text>

Although the first clowns date back to ancient times, the descendants of modern clowns were the traveling minstrels of the Middle Ages. They wore brightly colored costumes with ruffled collars and bells, plus they painted their faces or wore masks. They entertained by various means including poetry, music, juggling, acrobatics, and working with trained animals. Not until the sixteenth century when the commedia dell' arte began did pantomime become popular. Today it is a basic tool for clowns. From very early times the purpose of the clown was to display the gamut of human experience and emotion in an uninhibited manner, often by exaggeration.

Fredericks' clowns possess all the characteristic attributes. First, they wear the familiar costume: baggy pants, bells, and ruffled neck, wrist and ankle bands. Their faces are painted also. Their postures and gestures are very expressive. The Lovesick Clown shows exaggerated, unrepressed emotion. The mute Clown Musicians with their invisible instruments humorously remind us of the ability of clowns to entertain without sound. The Circus Train Clown has the circus train down below on the base and the Lovesick Clown has Cupid's arrow through his heart. The Acrobat Clown is depicted with a little dog balancing on the palms of his hands. The Juggler Clown has a ball balanced on the tip of his nose and the Clown Musicians play their imaginary instruments.

Fredericks sculpted the clowns using simple geometric shapes. The forms are highly stylized with clean lines and sharp edges making them visually appealing.</text>

Fredericks received this commission as a result of an honorable mention in the Section of Fine Arts World's Fair Competition. Completed under the Section of Fine Arts Public Buildings Administration Federal Works Agency, the finished terracotta relief originally hung over the Postmaster's door in Sandwich, Illinois.

"The Family (Farm Animals)," the work approved by the Section for the Sandwich, Illinois post office, features a mare and colt dominate the center portion of the relief. Balancing on either side are a ewe with two lambs and a sow with one of her pudgy shoats. Each of the animals expresses a vitality that suggests the active life and abounding health of the locality.

Fredericks designed "Colt and Pigs" as part of a series for a national products competition in 1939 in hopes that they would be placed on a government building in Washington DC, but the building was never built. The series consisted of 12 reliefs. Three are located at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum: "Cotton Pickers," "Colt and Pigs," and "Steers". Later Marshall grouped these three with "Sheep (The Guests Have Arrived)" and "Chimpanzee (Philosopher").</text>

The Eaton Manufacturing Company in Cleveland, Ohio commissioned this memorial in honor of the employees who died in World War II. A marble wall inscribed with the names of those employees who gave their lives for their country holds the bronze relief.

The eagle is the most prominent element. The simplified details of the eagle's body and feathers are typical of Fredericks’ style.

The face and obverse of the medallion are visible in the relief. The eagle’s talons grasp an olive branch and arrows signifying a capacity for both peace and war. On the obverse of the medallion, encircling the inscription is a laurel branch on the left and an oak branch on the right. These signify victory and strength.

Fredericks also designed a medallion for the Eaton Manufacturing Corporation in 1948.</text>
