An account of the resource
Considered by Fredericks to be “his greatest challenge,†the figure of Christ took him four years to complete. Funded by contributions from over 10,000 summer visitors to the shrine, the twenty-eight foot corpus symbolizes a Christ on the cross who is still living. Fredericks chose to depict the figure without a crown of thorns or a spear wound in its side. In this design, he “wanted to eliminate the suffering and agony for the observer and give the face an expression of great peace and strength.â€

"RE: Tracy W. McGregor Portrait Relief
Earlier this week in conversations with Marshall Fredericks, possibly on Monday when the docents were in Birmingham, Fredericks mentioned that McGregor had given a lot of money to a lot of libraries around the United States. He also indicated that casts of Fredericks' Portrait Relief had been distributed or installed in those various libraries around the country. Our records at this point in time only indicate that there are bronze replicas at the McGregor Library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and a copy at McGregor High School in Detroit. We currently do not know the material of either cast."

Tracy McGregor was born in Berlin Heights, Ohio, in 1869. Following his father's death in 1891, he left college and came to Detroit to take over operation of a mission for homeless men founded by his father. What came to be known as the McGregor Institute was located in several buildings along Brush Street. An estimated 700,000 men were housed or fed in the Institute, which closed in 1934 when the federal government took over care of the indigent as a result of the Great Depression. Katherine Whitney was born in 1873 into a wealthy Detroit family. Her father, David Whitney, made his business in lumbering and real estate. Not content to spend her time pursuing the usual social pleasures of her class, Katherine was directly involved in helping persons who were less fortunate. For instance, when she inherited a large house in Highland Park, she set it up as a haven for homeless children who had been kept in various institutions. When the children grew up and left the home, she deeded the property to the City of Highland Park for use as a library. The city later constructed a new McGregor Library which still stands on this site on Woodward Avenue in Highland Park.
Katherine Whitney met Tracy McGregor while she was a volunteer for the Infant's Ward Association of the Children's Free Hospital. The two married in November, 1901. Tracy McGregor became one of Detroit's influential citizens. Along with a group of business associates, he formed the Provident Loan Society to make loans at reasonable rates. He helped organize the Thursday Group, a number of civic leaders who met weekly to discuss community problems, tackling such issues as justice in police courts, inhumane prisons, and care for people with epilepsy. He was a supporter and trustee of the Merrill Palmer Institute as well as several universities.
In 1925, Tracy and Katherine began the McGregor Fund with a contribution of $5,000. The Fund made its first grants in 1931, supporting care of the indigent, relief for the sick, and higher education. Katherine also made several large gifts to the Fund. The total of the McGregors' contributions to the Fund amounted to approximately $10 million. A collector of rare books in his later years, Tracy McGregor's collection of Americana was donated to the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia following his death in 1936. Katherine died in 1954.

Tracy W. McGregor (1869-1936) was a civic leader, educator, and philanthropist with a particular interest in community health and the plight of the indigent. He was instrumental in establishing the Committee on Health Activities which developed into the McGregor Health Foundation and the McGregor Center in Detroit, Michigan. He contributed to the founding of the Wayne County Training School, and was the first president of the Merrill-Palmer School, both in Detroit, Michigan.
This relief was commissioned by the McGregor Fund, the philanthropic organization founded by Tracy and Katherine McGregor. There is a cast of just the head at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center at Wayne State University. This bronze relief can be found at the Tracy W. McGregor Elementary School, located on Edmore Street at Cordell, Detroit, MI. Being a collector of rare books, Mr. McGregor's collection was donated to the Alderman Library of American History, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. A bronze cast can also be found there.

"RE: Industry and Employment Activities, Recreational Activities, Motion in Nature, Transportation by Man
Molly gave me some information on these four reliefs. They were made at a time when a law had just gone into effect requiring that a specific portion of every appropriation for a public building be used for works of art. She did not know if it was a state or national law. She had the following information written down which was probably spoken by Mr. Fredericks. "Sculptural expression is clear and uncomplicated that the viewer should need no interpreter. - they a simple and lively expression which becomes as much literature as art. Each of the four compositions tell a story. In the Bureau of Employment Services Building lobby a plaque describes th work or industrial life of the state." (describing Industry and Employment Activities) Recreational Activities "describes the "goof life" and the joys of nature and recreation." Transportation by Man "expresses the movement in man and shows the evolution of Transportation from primitive beasts of burden to the modern expressway."

Marshall stated that these narrative reliefs were made when percentage-for-art programs came into existence. (This has to be confirmed.) The commissioning department officials stressed that the artwork should be "clear and uncomplicated." This excerpt may be from Fredericks: "Sculptural expression is clear and uncomplicated that the viewer should need no interpreter.-they are simple and lively expression which becomes as much as literature as art. They are considered 4th dimension because they show a progression of time lapsing and indicate movement/progression of a theme.
The plasters in the museum were painted silver because they were going to be cast in aluminum and this gave Fredericks an idea of how they would appear.
1. Industry and Other Employment Activities
Miner, construction worker, farmer with animals, tool and dye workers, and casting workers.
2. Recreational Activities
Gardening, golfing, sail boating, badminton, canoeing, horseback riding or fox hunting because there are dogs, hunting (animals seen: moose, raccoons, bear, birds).
2-point perspective composition; three triangular forms: two outer are land and one in center is water. One is on land that is land cultivated by man, one is on water and the last is in the wild or woods-land not cultivated by man.
3. Motion in Nature
A flow of animals in an elongated diamond like shape. They are dragonflies, butterflies, birds (geese and or ducks), gazelles, greyhounds, rabbits, dolphins and flying fish.
4. Transportation by Man
Earliest modes of travel-animal power: horses, mules, camels, and elephants, Roman chariot, England's "coach and four," early American covered wagon, Alaska dogsled, three abstracted airplanes in the air with jet fume tails, early to modern motorized vehicles. Swirling streamlined forms that the images appear on are indicative of road and cloverleaf highway that is on the right side near the modern automobile; indicating the development of the modern highway with the modern automobile.

The next pieces are four reliefs, two on either side of the Christ figure on the wall. They are located at the Columbus, Ohio, State Buildings, there are two twin buildings and there are two reliefs on each one. The one on the upper left is entitled "Industry," you have the different forms of industry with mining, and a foundry, pouring the molten metal, the power plants, farming industry, and the casting the rubber tire. Down below, the next relief is "Recreation" and we have all forms, golfers, someone planting a garden, sailboats, tennis players, some equestrian riders, and of course, there is hunting. These are cast in aluminum, while ours are the plaster models, painted silver to indicate the material used in casting. On the other side of the Christ figure, the lower sculpture is entitled "Motion in Nature." It depicts everything from the dragon fly, on the left, to the geese and the swans, and the gazelles and the greyhounds and the rabbits and the flying fish on the right. The one up above it is titled "Man and Transportation," and it shows different forms of transportation, the donkey, or mule, the elephant, stagecoach, and the jets and the automobiles. These twin buildings that I mentioned, one is the Department of Employment and Industry, and it holds the first two reliefs; the second building is the Department of Transportation and it holds the Man and Transportation" and "Motion in Nature" sculptures.

These four reliefs on either side of the Christ figure were designed for the Ohio bureau of Employment Services and Ohio Department of Transportation in Columbus, Ohio. Fredericks stated of these reliefs:
"Sculptural expression is clear and uncomplicated that the viewer should need no interpreter. They are (a) simple and lively expression which becomes as much literature as art. Each of the 4 compositions tells a story. In the Bureau of Employment Services Building lobby: Industry and Employment Activities describes the work or industrial life of the state (Ohio); Recreational Activities describes the good life and the joys of nature and recreation; Motion in Nature expresses the movement in nature and from each element of it, young people will take great enjoyment; Transportation by Man expresses movement in man and shows the evolution of transportation from primitive beasts of burden to the modern expressway."
The reliefs are located in two buildings; Motion in Nature and Transportation by Man are in the Ohio Department of Transportation. Industry and Employment Activities and Recreational Activities are located in the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services Building. Images of these reliefs can be seen in the book, Marshall M. Fredericks, Sculptor, pages 164-165.

Mrs. Dorothy (Honey) Arbury studied with Fredericks when she attended Kingswood School at the Cranbrook Educational Community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in the 1930s. She met him through her uncle, Alden B. Dow, a prominent architect in Midland, Michigan, with whom Fredericks worked on architectural sculpture projects. In 1963, Mrs. Arbury was on the founding Board of Control of Saginaw Valley College, which later became Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). She remained active on that board and on the SVSU Foundation Board into the 1990s. Mrs. Arbury and her husband, Ned Arbury, and Fredericks and his wife, Rosalind Fredericks, formed the idea of a permanent exhibit of Fredericks' work adjacent to the university's then-new facility for the art, music and theater departments. SVSU and the Arburys worked together toward an agreement to have the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Gallery and Sculpture Garden built adjacent to the art department.
The gallery opened to the public in the Arbury Fine Arts Center in May 1988. About half of the $7.2 million of private money raised for the building went to design and construction, restoration, transportation and installation. Fredericks oversaw installation of the more than 200 mostly plaster models in the permanent exhibit gallery.
Through the years, private donors have made it possible for some of the bronze casts to be made for the Sculpture Garden. Fredericks gave the balance of the collection in 1994. After his death in 1998, the gallery received his remaining tools, equipment, archives, architectural site models, sculptures and more. With the growth of the collection, the Board of Advisors elevated the gallery to museum status in 1999. In October 2003, the $2.5 million Phase II Capital Campaign expansion became a reality, nearly doubling the museum's size. The addition includes the Sculptor's Studio, a classroom, archives vault, research reading room, two temporary exhibition galleries and a gift shop.
