Description An account of the resource “The Expanding Universe Fountain” celebrates the nation's first exploration of outer space. According to Fredericks, the sculpture "represents this age of great interest, exploration and discovery in outer space...[and] the immensity, order and mystery of the universe.” The monumental central figure suggests a superhuman mythological being. Seated upon a ten-foot sphere, covered in a pattern of bright-star constellations, the figure holds two planets that he is sending off into space. The dynamic spiral orbit-form swirling around the sphere represents the speed and perpetual motion of space. Play of the water from numerous star-shaped sprays increases the feeling of movement. The full-scale casting of this sculpture is located in the South Court of the United States State Department Building in Washington, D.C. Public sculpture, American Description An account of the resource In 1936, Fredericks won a National Award Competition to design a fountain for the Levi L. Barbour Memorial, located on Belle Isle, an island park in Detroit, Michigan. Mounted 16 feet high on a granite pedestal, the bronze sculpture sits in a fountain basin. Four small carved granite animals surround the gazelle. Fredericks said: “I used this gazelle which to me has always been…sort of the perfection of the four-leggeds. …[I]t’s just a marvelous expression of the animal kingdom, and the lines of it are so beautiful and it just seemed to set itself up as a natural in that marvelous natural environment [of] Belle Isle.” Leaping Gazelle is the first commission Fredericks received and it initiated his career as a distinguished public sculptor. Description An account of the resource Installed on the front of the Central United Methodist Church in Waterford, Michigan, Fredericks cast this gold anodized sculpture in aluminum. The idea for this sculpture began during the summer of 1961 during a conversation with the minister of the church, Milton H. Bank. Fredericks worked directly with Elbert M. Wilmot, a representative from the church with respect to the proposal for this project.
