Description
An account of the resource
In 1936, Fredericks won a National Award Competition to design a fountain for the Levi L. Barbour Memorial, located on Belle Isle, an island park in Detroit, Michigan. Mounted 16 feet high on a granite pedestal, the bronze sculpture sits in a fountain basin. Four small carved granite animals surround the gazelle.
Fredericks said: “I used this gazelle which to me has always been…sort of the perfection of the four-leggeds. …[I]t’s just a marvelous expression of the animal kingdom, and the lines of it are so beautiful and it just seemed to set itself up as a natural in that marvelous natural environment [of] Belle Isle.â€
Leaping Gazelle is the first commission Fredericks received and it initiated his career as a distinguished public sculptor.
Gazelle Fountain is located at Brookgreen Gardens, Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

The Rebild National Park was purchased by Danish-born Americans to be a site for annual reunions and was deeded to the Danish government in 1912. The medal was produced to recognize the friendship between both countries and as a source of revenue.

This sculpture illustrates the well known Aesop Fable of “The Lion and the Mouse.†Fredericks’ rendition depicts the end of the story in which the tiny mouse returns the king of the jungle’s kindness by saving him from a hunter’s trap.
The J. L. Hudson Company commissioned this sculpture for Eastland Center in Harper Woods, Michigan. Like many of Fredericks’ sculptures, he designed it specifically for children.
Both animals possess humanized friendly facial expressions. The lion is reclining in a human-like position with crossed legs and his stylized round head and mane feature uniformly coiled ringlets. These artistic intentions make the “king of the jungle†appealing to all.

The Marshall M. Fredericks Collection consists of 200 linear feet of materials, including:
Correspondence: (13 linear feet) including personal, foreign ministry, and general correspondence as well as special letters and card received by Fredericks
Project (Job) Files: (7 linear feet) including correspondence between Fredericks and both sculpture commissioning clients and vendors that helped to fabricate the pieces
Subject Files: (24 linear feet) document Fredericks’ civic interests such as Disabled Americans’ Denmark meeting (DIADEM), Rebild National Park, and Danish Consular work, as well as fraternal organizations and the Marshall M Fredericks Sculpture Museum
Financial (30 linear feet) document the day-to-day operations of running a studio
Photographs: (25 linear feet) including photographs in a variety of sizes, negatives, and slides relating to Fredericks’ teaching career, projects, civic activities, and personal life
Clippings/Articles/Books: (28 linear feet) including media articles, journals, etc. about Fredericks and his work
Books and Magazines: (16 linear feet) including books and magazines which do not directly relate to Fredericks or his work

Description
An account of the resource
The Fountain, also known as the "Cleveland War Memorial", is composed of a large granite basin set with bronze plaques containing the names of men and women who gave their lives for their country. Located within the basin are four granite carvings depicting the great civilizations of the earth: Nordic, Eastern, Southern and Western cultures.
Centered within is the 10 ½ foot sculptured bronze sphere representing the Universe as man has imagined it. Its design contains symbols of Eternal Life and Spirit derived from ancient myths.
The bronze central figure towers 43 feet above the basin. This figure expresses the main theme of the Fountain: the spirit of mankind rising out of the flames of war and the destructive elements of life, reaching and ascending to a new understanding of life.
The Fountain took nineteen years to complete and is located at the Civic Center Mall A in Cleveland, Ohio.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1976, Fredericks enlarged these figures for the Midland Center for the Arts from the thirty-inch tall bronze version that he created while at Cranbrook in 1939.
These seven figures are in the style of jamb statues found in the portals of Gothic cathedrals. Attached to columns, sculptors lengthened these figures with unnatural proportions. Fredericks' figures all conform to this elongated shape and he has amusingly balanced them atop small orbs.
Although they are very similar in style, each one is individualized and possesses distinguishing attributes that in some way identifies them. The theme of this piece seems to parody the Seven Deadly Sins with Christian characters.
