Sitting with her hands oh her left knee and her head back looking toward the sky, the Sun Worshipper is a topless female with bare feet and a skirt covering her legs.
"The mysterious Sun Worshipper, originally designed in 1937, was enlarged and cast to Full-Scale in 1994. Fredericks treated this enigmatic, contemporary figure a classical manner but the result has a spiritual, ritualistic quality. The lower limbs of the female figure, nude from the waist up, are draped with a wide skirt. Her knees are spread wide, with toes and feet together. Her open hands are spread, palms up, and her upturned face is parallel with the sky so that her throat is stretched almost beyond physical capability. The figures bold form is deeply carved, with angular, archaized features, ranging from relatively naturalistic hands and feet to the striated, abstract forms of her hair, which are echoes in the faceted drape of her skirt. The body itself is sensitively rendered with lifelike proportions and curves. Muscular, solid, and androgynous, Sun Worshipper is a powerful figure captured in a vulnerable moment. Like the dragon, this figure is curled upon itself and turned psychologically inward, but the dramatic gesture of the upturned face suggests a spiritual quest, a philosophical concept that Fredericks has explored elsewhere."

"His last monumental work, Lord Byron, designed in 1938, enlarged by the artist, and cast posthumously in 1998 for the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum paradoxically seems to refer back to Fredericks's earliest influences. This literary figure, clearly inspired by Rodin's Balzac, strikes a shameless dramatic pose: head flung back with his hand on his forehead, heavy cloak partially pulled around his body with the other hand flying out to the side and back. Fredericks, in contrast to the symmetry that generally characterizes his designs, treated each side of the Byron figure in a different manner. Along its right side, the figure is closed and solid. The drop of the heavy cloak does not allow for articulation of forms or even for suggestion of the body beneath. Rather, the artist exploits the long, unbroken line of the cloak from the figure's chin to the ground. In contrast, the figure's left side is open and plastic with elbow and knee flung out at an angle from the nipped-in waist. Like Sun Worshipper, Lord Byron represents an important mid-career design that he was only able to realize in large scale at the end of his career."Marshall Fredericks, Suzanne P. "Marshall M. This armature is crafted of wood lath and the head of the Black Elk figure is finished in clay. The buffalo lays at the side of Black Elk as he offers his peace pipe (not attached) to the sky.

Full-Scale wood armature for Sun Worshipper. There is still much plasteline residue on the armature.
"The mysterious Sun Worshipper, originally designed in 1937, was enlarged and cast to Full-Scale in 1994. Fredericks treated this enigmatic, contemporary figure a classical manner but the result has a spiritual, ritualistic quality. The lower limbs of the female figure, nude from the waist up, are draped with a wide skirt. Her knees are spread wide, with toes and feet together. Her open hands are spread, palms up, and her upturned face is parallel with the sky so that her throat is stretched almost beyond physical capability. The figures bold form is deeply carved, with angular, archaized features, ranging from relatively naturalistic hands and feet to the striated, abstract forms of her hair, which are echoes in the faceted drape of her skirt. The body itself is sensitively rendered with lifelike proportions and curves. Muscular, solid, and androgynous, Sun Worshipper is a powerful figure captured in a vulnerable moment. Like the dragon, this figure is curled upon itself and turned psychologically inward, but the dramatic gesture of the upturned face suggests a spiritual quest, a philosophical concept that Fredericks has explored elsewhere."

It's sort o a great big smooth frog and it has great big round polished gold eyes that are half a sphere and they're just like mirrors so when you look in them you can see yourself all distorted like you do in a circus. So every time you go there you see all this. It worked out fine. So I did three, that's all. I did another one but it was of a dragon, I called it The Friendly Dragon. The architect said he didn't think he would use it because he said the children would be frightened of a dragon. But children love dragons and it's not an ugly dragon, it's a friendly dragon with a big smile and it's cozy and you can sit on its back on those humps on its back. It's just that he never was a child, I guess, so he doesn't know. So they put up a thing, a structural beam thing. I've never seen a child near it so maybe they didn't get the audience that they wanted really. I think maybe I'll do that Dragon. I like dragons anyway, they're special.

Why are dragons special to you?
MF
Well, Rozzie- one time I guess it was when I was sixty, Rozzie and the children got Earl Krentzin to make a walking stick for me with a dragon on top, which I love. And because she said that all these things, like all these big commissions which, you know, could kill you almost believe me the problems, Joy, are so manifold you can't believe in a thing like that Cleveland fountain… And to do it all alone, I mean without a big staff or anything, or if I were some company that does it for you like they do today, you know, their sculpture things are manufactured things, the things I do are sculpture things. And she said that all these things have been dragons that I've fought against, you know. And in a way that's really true, they been sort of dragons that you have to conquer and slay one way or another.
